Eastern Golf Club moves on after 84 years Manningham Leader. Matt Johnston, 2 July 2008 THE Eastern Golf Club is selling up and moving after 84 years at Doncaster. The club's prized 47ha site will be sold for up to $125 million after members voted to relocate at an extraordinary meeting last week. The club, opened by Prime Minister Stanley Bruce in 1924, hopes to buy land at Wonga Park to build a championship course on Lower Homestead Rd. Developers are now expected to queue for a piece of the club's Doncaster Rd heartland. Some members are distraught that they have to leave Doncaster, and the Leader believes some are exploring legal options. The relocation plan, drawn up by the club's board, proposes keeping a sports club and nine-hole course at Doncaster if $125 million is yielded from the sale. If less money comes in, less land will be kept. The club expects it will take about five years to create a new course, and will not move until then. Relocation was supported by 377 members and rejected by 276 members. It came 18 months after a push to relocate to Kingston Links at Rowville was defeated in 2006, and after a major review of the club's ailing finances. Eastern's captain Peter Dane said the decision was "very emotional" but members must unite to move the club forward. "This has been a divisive issue and we need to heal some wounds, but ... I am confident members will come together to build something quite special," Mr Dane said. He said the club would also work with external stakeholders in the land sale process. Many members were furious the club continued to push for relocation rather than find ways to secure a future at Doncaster. Doncaster state Liberal MP and Eastern social member Mary Wooldridge said she would fight for "a substantial amount of land" to be kept for community recreation. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Plea to scrap Chirnside Park golf course rezoningLilydale & Yarra Valley Leader. RESIDENTS opposed to development plans at the Chirnside Park Country Club are demanding the council abandon rezoning efforts. At last Tuesday's public meeting, attended by more than 250 angry people, the Protect the Park in Chirnside group urged residents to make submissions to the council calling for the plan to rezone the golf course as residential land be dropped. "The only way you can stop this proposal is to lodge an objection with the council," Protect the Park member Ian Tanner told the crowd. "You need to be passionate about why you don't want this to happen, and be clear about why this will destroy the amenity of Chirnside Park." The residents are opposed to plans for a 450 lot subdivision, citing concerns about traffic, loss of trees and destruction of their views. Protect the Park president Paul Jackman said he was hoping for a large number of objections to the proposed planning scheme amendment. "We want a 1000 objections to be lodged with the council, calling on them to abandon this proposal," he said at the meeting. Yarra Ranges Mayor Tim Heenan told the meeting the matter would not be discussed at the council until several weeks after submissions had closed. Chirnside Park Country Club president Bruce Bower said the club was urging its supporters to write to the council. " Any interested person has until Monday, June 30, to submit a letter outlining their views on the plan. The matter will return to council later this year, where the council can either abandon the rezoning or refer the matter to an independent panel. Detailed outlines of the plans can be viewed at the Yarra Ranges Shire council office in Anderson St, Lilydale. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fears for Course Let people dedicated to keep Eastern Golf Club run the Club. The Eastern Golf Club decided last month to sell its 47ha Doncaster site to developers in favour of purchasing a new property in Wonga Park. Eastern Golf Club is believed to be favouring a block of land in Lower Homestead Rd, but council sources said several blocks in the area are being considered. If the Eastern Golf Club does move to a new course, it will be following in the footsteps of Croydon Golf Club, which opened the $29 million Yering Meadows course last month and would be a competitor for any future relocated Chirnside Park Country Club. Chirnside Park Country Club president Bruce Bower said while his club was "on its last legs" at its present location, members were convinced moving would secure the club's future. "Our members and supporters remain committed to relocating our golf course. It is the only way our club can survive and remain a vital part of the community," Mr Bower said. Protect the Park in Chirnside chairman Paul Jackman said residents were focused on keeping the golf course at its current site, and had not discussed the impact of the Doncaster club's relocation plans. Mr Jackman said the rezoning process had demonstrated high levels of resident opposition to the plan to sell the Chirnside Park golf course for a 450-lot residential development. "I spoke with the council last Wednesday and was told there had been 900 submissions opposed to this and 250 for," he said. "An overwhelming number of residents have written individual letters of submission." Shire spokesman James Martin said more than 1000 submissions had been received. * Do we need another golf course in the Yarra Valley? The Doncaster club's board has released plans to relocate to a yet-to-be-built championship course at 4-6 Lower Homestead Rd, Wonga Park, and members will vote on the proposal at a June 26 meeting. The board, which has forecast a $15,000 debt by the end of 2009, hopes to get $125 million for its prime Doncaster Rd land, and will retain part of the site for a nine-hole course it if gets top dollar. Members campaigning against relocation say the board has ignored their plans to resurrect the Doncaster course, and the club has not hunted for new members because of a relocation obsession. Designing and building a new course would take four years and cost $50 million. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MP airs more golf club development fearshttp://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2005/09/14/1459797.htm Posted Wyong MP Paul Crittenden has raised further concerns in State Parliament relating to a $150 million development at Belmont Golf Club. Later this month, members of the club are due to vote on extending the term of a development agreement for another two years. Under the deal, Sydney-based Developer Terrace Tower will build up to 400 homes on ocean front land owned by the club. Mr Crittenden, who is a member of the golf club, told Parliament he has grave concerns about attempts by Terrace Tower's subsidiary, Kalayla, to prevent club members from speaking out about the deal. "Kalayla Pty Ltd has prepared a confidentiality deed specifically prohibiting signatories from disclosing part or parts of the documents in, and I quote, 'any statement to the State Parliament of NSW, or by allowing any other person to refer to any part or parts of the document in any statement to the State Parliament of NSW'," he said. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> On Course for Conflict (no link to article available) Golfers fight to stop sale of club <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Community Campaigns and Fundraisers Retain Eastern At Doncaster (READ) group are actively presenting the alternative to relocation which will keep The Eastern Golf Club in its location at Doncaster. We are motivated to talk positively about our wonderful course again I understand that the Tuesday and Thursday night information sessions were modestly attended by members. There was a professional moderator and quite a few experts retained by the board to respond to those -difficult questions-. The relocation model was presented, again.
The board forecast an insubstantial $15,000 debt (after significant capital expenditure including $200,000 desalination plant) by 2009. The board hopes to get $125 million for the land and relocate to Wonga Park district. However, very importantly the RESOLUTION has been drafted to allow the sale at $90M - 10% GST ($81M) and purchase at a price and where they see fit (possible Lilydale?).
Serious questions were asked which identified that the board had not included remaining at Confidence seemed to be restored when members were advised that marketing activities (further that a single letter box drop) can be done to rebuild the membership and financial stability is not difficult to restore once activities return to remaining at
Lets get back to the fun of golf stop development!

Eastern Support group BBQ in Lawford Reserve Photo: S Pink Thank you and congratulations for the solid support that everyone gave at the Lawford Reserve BBQ's on 14th and 21st June. We had a diverse group of supporters who contributed in a variety of ways and all showed that they cared about the future of the Eastern Golf Club and its members. It was agreed that the BBQ was a success and will now become an annual event. Mary Wooldridge, who is a Social member at Eastern and is Doncaster's sitting Member of Parliament, engaged in lengthy discussions developing her understanding of the Club's issues. Mary enquired about details of the relocation process and the options available to remain here at Doncaster. Manningham councillor Warren Welsh, outlined his understanding of the the present situation to us from his perspective and reviewed a variety of options available to the Club. Many residents provided in-kind support, some with a BBQ, food, logistic support and deseminating and recording information, collecting ideas etc. Members from the Greens expressed their objection to any development on the Eastern Golf Club's land, which is a significant irreplaceble green wedge providing immeasureable environmental benefits.
Great TEAMWORK! Photo: Theo Graze
